Pomegranate molasses is easy enough to make, it’s pomegranate juice, honey and lemon cooked down to a thick syrupy consistency. But regarding your question, I would say don’t do that. Pomegranate molasses is sweet and tart. I would think balsamic or a thick Pedro Ximenez Spanish vinegar would be a decent substitute.

Pomegranate molasses is easily found in the supermarket and you will not regret having a bottle on your refrigerator door shelf for all kinds of uses — dressings, sauces, mixed with seltzer (and whatever else you’d like) on a hot day.

I made this with leftover steak in wraps and it was really good! Also like that this muhamarra doesn’t add bread like many do. I was inspired by a Georgian walnut green bean dish to use the leftovers as dressing for a green bean and potato salad. It was really delicious! added some herbs and green onions too.

You likely have a Middle Eastern store nearby. All Middle Eastern grocery stores carry Pomegranate molasses.

For those of us who don't have pomegranate molasses: the amount is miniscule, 1/8th tsp per serving. The recipe already has plenty of tang from the lemon juice, so its purpose to to add sweetness. I would just substitute 1 tsp of honey for the 1 tsp of pomegranate molasses.

I think this needs a little something extra, maybe the goat cheese one reviewer suggested or the pickles suggested by another. On its own, the spread doesn't pack enough flavor for me. Fun to try, but not great.

This is a fantastic little recipe to level up one’s sandwich game. I found pomegranate molasses at Whole Foods. I don’t have a food processor but the spread came out just fine in a standard blender. Definitely recommend ciabatta squares if they’re available to you; they’re the perfect texture for this sandwich.

I made the Muhammara as directed, except with Date Syrup instead of the Pomegranate Molasses. Turned out great and I've made it twice in two weeks. Instead of poaching the chicken, I grilled thinly sliced chicken breasts with seasoning in a Syrian flavor profile.Not only is the sandwich fantastic, I've used the Muhammara on burgers later in the week as well as a dip. It's one of my new favorite things.

An absolute banger. Honestly the poached chicken was good by itself but the sauce definitely elevates it. Added raw onions to the sandwich (of course).

I also added sliced raw onion, feta, a little tahini sauce and yogurt-garlic sauce, and then grilled the sandwich until toasty, crunchy, and a little melty. I just used multigrain bread that wasn’t pre-toasted.

Make this four times now, love it. Good, healthier lunch option than most sandwiches... although I do add a slice of pepper jack.

Pomegranate molasses is also available in a lot of Asian groceries (at least the ones in my area, they cater to lots of Middle Easterners and Africans).

This was wonderful! After trying to make my own pomegranate molasses and failing miserably by burning it, I used a bit of extra lemon and a dollop of fig jam. It gave me the sweet/sour I was looking for, and tasted like an authentic swap.

The spread is absolutely delicious so I welcomed the excess amount it made. Made my sandwich with spinach leaves, red onions, and avocado with the chicken and it was incredible. Added red peppercorns and coriander seeds to the poaching liquid (I don't know if it did anything but it tasted great!).

Loved this recipe! I did not have walnuts so I used pecans instead and it was just as good! I had PLENTLY of the spread left over. I use it as a spread for other types of sandwwiches (the best is with fresh mozzerella, argula and sliced kalamata olives), on rice cakes, etc. Still there was a lot left over. Has anyone tried freezing it for future use?

Sauce is excellent (I added more spice). The poached chicken was too bland for me. I ended up shredding it and mixing in more sauce,and some lemon and herbs on hand. Then added pickles before arugula as several others suggested. Along with the Mayo I used to grill the sourdough, it gave it more pop. It was good but I found myself yearning for a Popeyes spicy chicken sandwich anyway. Next time will try preparing chicken breasts like I do for piccata.

Made exactly as written and it was a fantastic sandwich. May up the Aleppo pepper by an extra 1/2 tsp next time.

We have muhamarra in our local grocery store here so these were even easier. My 12 year old assembled them and they were delicious!
