What Do Blood Oranges Taste Like?

Blood oranges are a variety of orange, which have a deep dark purple interior, which looks like blood. They taste like a regular orange, however the color of the inner fruit different than traditional orange varieties.

They are sweet and fresh tasting, like a classic navel orange. They are in season in winter, like most citrus fruits, and you can typically find them in stores from December through April.

Winter can be a difficult time to find fresh, local produce where I live in New England. But recipes with citrus fruits absolutely shine in the winter months. There’s nothing like deep blood oranges, fresh clementines, and sweet grapefruits to bring a little sunshine to the table all winter long.

What’s In Blood Orange Salad?

See the recipe card below for full ingredient amounts and recipe instructions!

  • Blood Oranges
  • Salad Green Mix – I used an organic mix which has a bit of everything. I love the contrast between the peppery, dark greens, and the sweet juice blood oranges.
  • Olive Oil
  • Sunflower Oil: our go-to oil for everything, it has a neutral mild flavor, great for salad dressings. It’s also high oleic, which makes it one of the best oils for roasting at high temperatures.
  • Walnuts: because I love adding nutritious ingredients to my foods when I can. I stocked up a few bags of these walnuts which are super cheap and a great value for the quality.
  • Hulled Sunflower Seeds – a favorite addition to salads, I love adding these little seeds which give a fantastic flavor and crunch.
  • Hemp Hearts – this is a new great salad addition we’ve adopted – hemp hearts are great for adding texture and a slightly nutty flavor to salads.
  • Fresh Garlic
  • Pinch Of Salt
