1.75-acre spring-fed swimming pool is the star of this 45-acre desert park that also offers lodging.

Beautiful natural bottom pool. Snorkeling was amazing! Diving boards, plenty of picnic tables. Cleanest restrooms! Outside area for pets, for they are not allowed in swimming area. So bring plenty of water for pets. The park gets super hot! It is West Texas! Camping is closed, but there are accommodations in the town of Balmorhea. Very nice Park Rangers pleased to answer questions. Fort Davis State park is close by as well. A must visit if you make it to Balmorhea State Park! Also a great day spot for Big Bend travelers!

I almost don't want to say what an absolutely cool place this is. Very nice bath houses for changing and toilet needs. The pool is one of the best I've been in as natural artesian spring fed man made pool by civilian conservation corpse. Pool is constant 74 degrees. It seemed warmer than that to me. The water in absolutely beautiful gin clear. Bring goggles and see fish turtles and minnows. One half of the deep end is chest deep on me 6'2", then drops to 35'. There's a shallow wing for the kids and there's a deep wing for diving. If they are not allowing camping due to remodeling there is plenty of camping 2 miles away at Lake Balmorhea. If you traveling stop by swim and cool off for an hour or two. Don't look get in it's fabulous. This us all a lie don't go here i want this Texas pearl to be unknown.

Awesome place! We stayed in the cabins they have on site and it was very clean and nice. The pool is amazing!! We dove two days and had a blast. The scenic drives headed towards big bend state park / the Prada art building is a must do as well while you’re there.

This is one of the coolest places I've ever been to. The whole thing is just neat. It's extremely cold so it is refreshing in the West Texas heat. If you like swimming, this is the place to go.Please note that they required advanced reservations, so make sure you do that well before you travel.

Patrick F — Google review

Nice facilities and looks like a really nice place, especially for those who live in the area. The spring (pool) was smaller than expected and there really isn't anything beyond that. They were in middle of construction for a camping area and they also have a nice wildlife viewing station for the extremely out of place wetlands that the spring creates in the middle of the desert landscape.

Isaiah G — Google review

A national treasure deep in the heart of Texas.Refreshing on a hot day.Cold natural spring/lake water.Practice your high dive before you arrive. No lifeguards on duty.Bring your own refreshments. Bring your own snorkeling/floating water gear to see lots of fish and turtle in the water. Also bring your own, chairs, blankets, etc.No glass, no alcohol.Make reservations well in advance - morning and afternoon slots available. This is a family environment and not your own personal time to blare your own type of music. Everyone is very respectful of each other.

This place had been on my bucket list for years and now that we’ve been I can say the drive was so worth it. Very large spring fed pool with clear crisp water. There were multiple different kinds of fish and turtles. Some areas are as deep as 20-25 feet, amazing for practicing diving and for snorkeling! Definitely bring googles and snorkels. They also have multiple diving boards one tall and multiple smaller ones. So glad we were able to come here and will definitely be back!! Some walking surfaces are slippery as expected and make sure to reserve your spot ahead of time to guarantee entry.

Beautiful Desert Oasis! This is a spring fed pool and is 75 degrees year round The water is crystal clear! There are small fish and turtles you can observe and diving boards to enjoy, bring goggles or snuba gear. The kids loved it so much their first visit that we stopped back on our way home from our trip to Big Bend. Definitely worth the stop!

Has a natural spring swimming pool. Has a beautiful view of the mountains. Had a really good time swimming and just hanging out. The pool goes from 3’ to 25’ , has multiple diving boards. The facility is clean, have nice restrooms and changing area. Most definitely will be back. Follow me for more reviews!!!!!!

We came to this park for my birthday weekend trip. Great experience swimming at a spring fed pool, also considered one of the largest pools in the world.Only issue is that they don't let pets inside the gate. We traveled with a 4 month old puppy, miniature poodle size who is not going to harm anyone. We have actually traveled with our dog to other Texas State Parks with no issues. The dog wasn't going to get into the water, she was going to stay leashed to a picnic table.Luckily, a park ranger gave us the number of his dog groomer friend, who lives in a nearby RV park. This lady was able to pet sit the dog while we were swimming at the pool.

It's beautiful!!!!! I'm so glad I was able to experience ethic place. The water is blue, clear, and very refreshing! Make sure you are well prepared and bring everything you need because there is pretty much nothing in the near area, no corner stores or dollar stores. There are restrooms, and changing areas, as well as showers. There's plenty of space for everyone, but you may not always get a picnic table. Some people bring their own camping chairs, tents and tables.

Marlene L — Google review

I loved it. It comes from an underground springs. The depth goes from 3 feet to 5 feet and then drops to 20 feet. The water is clear & there are fish in the water. I saw 2 catfish in the deeper ends. No grills are allowed in the pool area, but there are grills outside the pool area.

Andrew L — Google review

What a well-rounded swimming hole. The information provided about how it came to be and how the water flows through is a lot of fun and educational. My kids had no problem swimming around with vest and without after they got comfortable. The crystal clear water is magnificent of a site highly recommend using goggles but a snorkel would do best.

Machi R — Google review

Decent enough campground that looks like it had a recent upgrade. We stopped for the night and the facilities were good. Camping fee includes entrance to the pool. I was a little disappointed with pool. I kind of expected some kind of fancy, clean pool with sparkling fresh spring water. Instead it's kind of a large, slimy pool with a lot of small fish. Not horrible and a decent spot for a hot day but not spectacular.

Hugh J — Google review

Beautiful unique park in west Texas. The natural spring swimming pool is so fun! My kiddos had a blast swimming with fishes. Lol. They have a shallow end (3 ft, I believe) that's perfect for younger kids. And the deepest part is 25 feet. The water is super cold when you first get in. I think it's around 72-75 degrees Fahrenheit year round. Picnic tables are right next to the pool so you can enjoy a picnic lunch without having to leave the pool area. With the Davis Mountains as a backdrop what could be a more wonderful place to be.Clean restrooms/changing rooms are very close by. If you have a State Park pass it's free to get in, if not then it's $7 for anyone over 13. Overnight camping is closed for renovations. If you are visiting during the summer or weekends, id recommend buying a day pass in advance cause they reach capacity pretty quickly.

Sum M — Google review

Honestly amazing. The water is perfect and clear. Highly recommend bring goggles and lunch. The diving boards are a thrill. The tall one is intimidating but totally worth it. Hard to dive once you up there lmao. The cabins and camping have been closed for ~5 years but you can camp nearby at Balmorhea lake! The town is awesome. 10/10 would recommend and can not wait until the camping and cabins are open!

James M — Google review

Wonderful swimming hole. Cool diving boards, cool water and the entrance rangers were nice. No life guards or rules enforcement. (People drinking, smoking and feeding the fish) Nice place though and the rangers keep it clean.

Chris B — Google review

Great place to relax and swim with the turtles and little fishes. It was a hot day so the water seemed very cold but it is always the same temperature. Restrooms were spotless, they had showers as well.

Very nice spring in the middle of nowhere. We spent the day here swimming and relaxing. It was a little chilly but very worth it. If you’re in the area I highly recommend.

Ricardo O — Google review

I was there on Sunday, the pool is amazing and HUGE. There were a lot of people in the early afternoon but the place didn’t feel crowded. The water was clean and refreshing, I legit did not want to leave. We stopped here on our way back home from Marfa - I’m based in Dallas so this is solid 7 hour drive for us, but I definitely see us making a trip out this way again solely for my this state park. The park rangers are friendly and greet everyone, they keep the park clean, they’re doing an amazing job.

We recently had the pleasure of visiting Balmorhea State Park in west Texas, and it was an absolute delight! Despite being in renovation status, the park has already undergone significant transformations, boasting brand new facilities, camping sites, and big rig friendly RV sites with 30 and 50 amp connections. While there's no sewage hook up, the dump station is conveniently located and easily accessible. The crown jewel of the park is undoubtedly the stunning San Solomon Springs, which form a massive pool that's perfect for swimming, snorkeling, or simply relaxing. The crystal-clear waters are a sight to behold, and the surrounding scenery is breathtaking. What struck us most was the park's natural beauty and tranquility. The renovation efforts have clearly prioritized preserving the park's natural charm while providing modern amenities. The staff were friendly and helpful, and the overall atmosphere was welcoming and peaceful. In our opinion, Balmorhea State Park is one of the best state parks we've had the pleasure of visiting. We can't wait to see the finished renovations and experience the park in all its glory. If you're a nature lover, camper, or simply looking for a relaxing getaway, Balmorhea State Park is a must-visit destination in west Texas.Rating: 5/5 starsRecommendation: Don't miss the opportunity to explore this Texas gem! Be sure to check the park's website for up-to-date information on renovations and plan your visit accordingly.

This is one of the coolest state parks I've seen. A large spring fed swimming pool with 3ft, 5ft, 20ft, and 25ft swimming areas. Two diving boards. Swim with the minnows, catfish, and the turtles. Water stays around 75 degrees all year round. We went on a cold day and still managed to jump in and enjoy ourselves. It was cold and we didn't stay long, but totally worth the stop.

Tim A — Google review

This park is heaven on earth. It is so calm, beautiful and natural. I saw a tortoise, fish and a few birds. One can spend hours here. Will come back for sure. There are many benches to sit and relax if you can't swim

Swaroop K — Google review

Great place to spend a few days and just relax. The air is hot and dry; the water is cool and clear. The staff is friendly and the grounds are in great shape. They limit the number of people in the park so it's never overcrowded. It's an excellent destination for all ages.

In summary, Balmorhea State Park swimming pool is a true hidden gem and a must-visit destination for anyone seeking a unique and fun-filled adventure. Whether you're cooling off in the refreshing waters, marveling at the diverse aquatic life, or simply soaking in the natural beauty of the surroundings, this place has something magical to offer. 👍Balmorhea State Park swimming pool is an absolute oasis in the desert, and I can't sing its praises enough! This hidden gem is a refreshing escape from the scorching Texas heat, offering a one-of-a-kind swimming experience that's unlike any other.Nestled amidst the desert landscape, this swimming hole is a true marvel. The crystal-clear waters beckon you in, offering a cool respite from the arid surroundings. It's like stumbling upon a mirage, except this one is very real and very refreshing. One of the highlights of the pool is its versatility. From the shallow 2' kids' area, perfect for little ones to splash around safely, to the deeper sections with diving boards reaching up to 20 feet, there's something here for swimmers of all ages and skill levels. And for the adventurous souls, discovering that the deepest area plunges to an impressive 25 feet is just the cherry on top!But what truly sets Balmorhea apart is the aquatic life. The friendly fish that inhabit the pool add an extra layer of charm to the experience. They'll swim right up to you, curious and unafraid, almost like you're in your very own aquarium. And the sensation of them nibbling at your skin is oddly delightful, like a natural spa treatment! Moreover, the maintenance of the pool is impeccable. There are benches to sit on and lots of shade to enjoy. There are also areas to sun bathe. Despite its remote location, the facilities are well-kept and clean, ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for all visitors. Note that the restrooms and showers close at 7pm.This was such a beautiful place especially after discovering how the pool is fed. Very refreshing and five stars without a doubt! 💥😊

Absolutely beautiful. Very unique experience in the natural springs swimming hole. Crystal clear water was beautiful.

David P — Google review

A natural cool spring fed pool enclosed by man made concrete banks with natural bottom where fishes and aquatic plants thrive. We also spotted a big softshell turtle in a brook next to the pool. Plenty of picnic tables in the shaded woods were available when we visited.

Steve C — Google review

This park is nice. Having a pavilion to get out of the sun was nice. (Not all spots have one). The pool was nice. The rangers were helpful. They require you to wear a wrist band while staying there. Lots of birds to watch.

Sandra W — Google review

An oasis in the desert. This was so fun to stop on our journey across Texas. Big clean bathrooms with changing places and showers. Lots of trees for shade and tables, but get one early because they do fill up.There are fish and turtles. Would be great for divers. We didn't see any that day, but we took masks and snorkels. Also, take tubes or lifejackets to float around because the center section is deep.

Lindsay W — Google review

It was a fun unique place to go water clean and full of fish and natural spring water? We saw a few turtles and ducks too. Clean place to change and plenty of quiet spots to chill and float on Friday afternoon.

Alison H — Google review

My husband and I/ with are extended family went to the lake for Father's day outing. We went to the lake and before you go in there is a fee, for two people it was $14.00 dollars 💵. Why?? There are no bathroom in walking distance! You have to go over the bridge and use the small bathroom they have there. You should have multiple accommodation for your guests convenience!! There really isn't much to look at there was trash on the beach and when driving over the bridge you saw that they were cleaning up the ground and just left it there. Pulled up bushes and tree branches. That is not what guests should look at, as a nice few!!! Also be very careful walking into the water,it's very slippery.

Anita R — Google review

We went for a day of swimming and came back around 10pm for their Perseids meteor watch party. We had a grand and relaxing time made all the better by the kind, funny and observant Park Rangers on duty. We want to thank them for all they do, including the fun constellation stories and safely herding a skunk away from us at night. A truly wonderful place!

Balmorhea Blue Rock Shop

Rock shop

Shopping

Gift & Specialty Shops

I am rating this little shop a 10 on the scale of 1-5 not because of all the beautiful things in the shop, but because the people who are running the shop are so helpful. We were looking for a place to go kick the rocks and maybe find a few small sparkles, what we got was exact locations of where to go. And what we found were small treasures that will never be forgotten. Thank you to the Balmorhea Blue Rock Shop.

Such an awesome Rock Shop! I stumbled in here yesterday hoping to find advice on where I could buy a beach towel in the little town, and maybe a souvenir rock for my daughters. I didn't find a towel, but I got way more than I could have imagined with a very unexpected art lesson when I first arrived, some pretty awesome rocks, and an amazing visit with Miss Sheila afterwards! I highly recommend stopping into The Rock Shop if you make it to Balmorhea!

Kristy B — Google review

Sheila was so sweet and she knows her rocks. She helped us with any questions we had and we got some unique stones to take home.

We loved this lil laid-back shop & talking with Ms. Sheila. They have a sweet selection of jewelry & crystals for a great price. I bought this gorgeous chunk of fluorite & this stunning pietersite bracelet 😍HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!!

Great jewelery and rock shop. Old style silver smithing. Sheila is very helpful and friendly. She was working on some old style silver smithing jewelery. She can do custom jewelery if requested. The shop has a variety of hand made jewelery and there excellent pieces in all budget ranges. An assortment of minerals with a nice assortment of cut slabs and rocks. Drop by, I was glad I did.

Observatory at UT Austin with an exhibit gallery, theater for solar viewings & tours of telescopes.

We did the self guided daytime tour. We would have loved to get tickets for a star gazing party but they were fully booked. It was worth going just for the views from the top of Mt Locke.

Jimmyp — Google review

Absolutely breathtaking experience! Everybody is really friendly and willing to discuss the observatory with you. All of the visitors exhibits are cool and help explain the substance and purpose behind these massive telescopes. I definitely recommend making the drive out to the middle of nowhere to visit this place. There is honestly a little more to it than I imagined. Just one note, they do not take American Express.

Chase M — Google review

Not a lot there for visitors unless you pay for extras--solar viewing presentation, guided tour, star gazing. But it's not expensive to do so and it's very interesting and educational. Plus there are some great views of the surrounding area since it's located on 2 mountains.

Don D — Google review

Enjoyed our July 25th star gazing party. We were hoping to see more of the Milky Way but the moon was out. However, we were able to see the moon up close, really close! Thanks to the staff for their amazing knowledge.

I recently had the pleasure of visiting the MacDonald Observatory in Fort Davis, Texas, and I must say, it exceeded all my expectations! This place is a gem for anyone interested in astronomy or simply looking for a unique and educational experience.Firstly, let me commend the friendly and welcoming front desk staff. From the moment we arrived, they made us feel right at home, providing all the necessary information and assistance to ensure we had a fantastic visit. The visitor center is a treasure trove of interactive and engaging activities for kids. It's not often you find a place where learning is so much fun! From hands-on exhibits to informative displays, there's something here to spark the curiosity of budding astronomers of all ages. But the real highlight of our visit was the tour. The staff members leading the tours are not only courteous but also incredibly knowledgeable. Their passion for astronomy shines through as they guide you through the observatory's fascinating history and cutting-edge research. And let's not forget the night time star party! It was an unforgettable experience gazing at the stars through the powerful telescopes while the hosts expertly navigated the night sky, pointing out constellations and celestial wonders. Their patience and enthusiasm made the evening truly magical.I would be remiss if I did not also mention the beautiful views when you get up to the observatory and you look down into the valley below. It's just an overall beautiful experience.Whether you're a seasoned stargazer or just curious about the universe, this place has something for everyone. Five stars all around! 👍👍

Joey P — Google review

We had a really fun experience at the McDonald's Observatory. The woman who was presiding over the stargazing party was great! She was funny and insightful. My favorite parts of the visit was her pointing out constellations and stars with a laser pointer while sharing interesting stories that have been passed down from generations. Priceless. It does get a lot colder up here at night, so bring an extra jacket ir blanket if you're going in cooler weather. The gift shop is pretty cool and has lots of interesting books, shirts and more. It's pretty far away from everything, so if you're planning to go for a night stargazing, a suggestion is to stay overnight somewhere close. Another suggestion for the staff is to dim down some of the red lights as they can be a little bright. Overall I highly recommend seeing the dark skies from this remote place in West Texas! #darkskies

I love astronomy and everything about space. This place was jaw dropping. We went on the self guided tour. I loved every minute I was up on those summits. I don’t want to say to much about the experience because you need to see it yourself if you go. It does require you to drive up to the summits. I don’t know what it’s like on the guided tour. An amazing place for someone who likes astronomy and space stuff.

Uilicix — Google review

I recently had the pleasure of visiting the McDonald's Observatory with my family on June 30th, 2023, and it was an experience that left us in awe. With our two energetic 8-year-old twin boys and our curious 3-year-old daughter, we were eager to embark on a night filled with stargazing and telescope exploration. I must say, McDonald's Observatory exceeded our expectations and provided us with an enchanting adventure.Upon arriving at the observatory, we were greeted by a friendly and knowledgeable staff who made us feel welcome and excited about the upcoming activities. The facility itself was well-maintained and showcased a perfect blend of scientific wonder and natural beauty. We could tell that great care had been taken to create an inviting atmosphere for visitors of all ages. The highlight of our visit was, of course, the opportunity to peer through the observatory's impressive telescopes. The view of the night sky was absolutely breathtaking, and our children's faces lit up with wonder as they gazed at distant galaxies and sparkling constellations. The staff members were patient and informative, offering explanations and answering our questions with enthusiasm. It was a joy to witness our kids' curiosity being nurtured and their love for science and astronomy being ignited. In addition to the telescopes, McDonald's Observatory offered various educational exhibits and presentations that catered to different age groups. Our 8-year-old boys were especially thrilled to participate in the interactive displays and hands-on activities. The observatory's commitment to providing an educational experience while keeping it engaging and accessible for young children was truly commendable. The overall organization of the event was well-executed, and we didn't encounter any significant delays or issues. We appreciated the attention to detail in terms of safety measures, ensuring that everyone could enjoy the evening without any concerns. The staff's professionalism and passion for astronomy were evident throughout our visit, making it even more memorable. While we thoroughly enjoyed our time at McDonald's Observatory, there are a couple of minor areas where improvements could be made. Firstly, it would be helpful to have more seating options available for families with younger children during the presentations. Secondly, although the staff was knowledgeable and friendly, it would have been beneficial to have more interactive discussions or Q&A sessions to further engage visitors and encourage deeper learning.Overall, our visit to McDonald's Observatory was an unforgettable experience for our entire family. The enchanting night sky, the informative exhibits, and the welcoming staff all contributed to a memorable evening that sparked a newfound love for astronomy in our children. We highly recommend McDonald's Observatory as a must-visit destination for families seeking an awe-inspiring and educational adventure under the stars.

Went to the star party with the family and really enjoyed ourselves. The host was very informative and all the staff were happy to answer any questions anybody had. We got to see some amazing stellar bodies and gained a greater appreciation for the universe we live in. I highly recommend going here and the drive out there was simply amazing.

Dave — Google review

Loved it! Got to look through 5 telescopes at different types of clusters/galaxies/stars and the star talk was great! Bonus (sorta): we saw 2 starlink trains pass over. Pro tip: try to go on a night when it’s near a new moon to get a little more time with the stars.

Erin T — Google review

As you might have seen in my other reviews, I am a bit of a science nut so this review is biased. Very nice visitor center with public outreach exhibits. They also have daytime tours and a solar talk. If you have a RV you'll need to sign up for a tour -- RVs are allowed on the road up to the observatories. The tours sell out well in advance so you have been forewarned! Also check out the evening star parties if you have time.

Bill C — Google review

I attended the star party where they point out constellations and talk everything stars. They let you look through the telescopes which makes it extra cool. You do have to wait in lines but it goes by pretty quick. We got to go twice in the 2 hour period of the program. It seems like a good activity for people of all ages. A great way to spend an evening! They have a cool gift shop with packaged snacks and drinks. Restrooms are clean and they have a water bottle refill spout at the water fountain. You can tell everyone really cares about the program and are super informative. Worth going!

Adriana A — Google review

The Star party was so much fun!! Amazing information! We got to see Saturn, mars, and Jupiter which was my favorite part! I would recommend this to everyone of all ages. We got lucky with the moon not being out which made the stars shine brighter. The staff was amazing and very friendly. The host was funny and kept everyone engaged.Make sure you dress warm and bring blankets! Can't wait to do this again!!!!

Had a wonderful time! Did the sun viewing program and self guided tour, learned a lot. The presenter was very fun and funny, also knowledgeable, informative and shared lots of fascinating details. Great interactive displays in the visitor's center.

We attended a Star Party.Buy tickets in advance as they sell out.Indoor exhibit was nice.Great facilities.Go all the way to the top if you can for a self-guided tour.Very educational. Can see wildlife, too - javelina and deer.

Auda G — Google review

I went here with family to attend a Star Party and it was so magical! Our star guide was very knowledgeable and I learned so much about constellations that night. This observatory is located in one of the darkest skies in the US, so it is definitely worth the drive to see all those stars! It truly is incredible what is right above our heads every night that we are unable to see due to light pollution. They also have a cool souvenir shop that I got a very comfortable sweatshirt from. Also, we got to look through 5 different telescopes at different astronomical features, like a new star forming! We had all ages of people here and we all had a great time. One thing I will say is that after the Star Party’s over, it is REALLY dark and you have to drive down winding mountain roads. So maybe bring someone along who’s comfortable with driving that. Still, 10/10 experience, highly recommend visiting here!

Teresa C — Google review

Wonderfully dark! If I had a bucket list, seeing the universe through powerful telescopes at the University of Texas McDonald Observatory would be on it. If you keep such lists... make note of this fantastic place and go.

Cindy — Google review

The night sky presentation at The McDonald observatory is remarkable and well worth the price of admission. The Frank Bash visitors center is remarkable too. We went on a tour of the Observatory on Saturday afternoon and were wowed by the amount of information that we learned, listened too and saw. This is a tour that everyone should make the commitment to go too. It may be a long drive but it is well worth it!

Ann B — Google review

Worth a visit, even if you don’t have time for a guided tour. The visitor center at the base is lovely. It’s tucked away on the right at the base of the mountain. And you can drive up to the telescopes after checking in. You can walk into one of the telescopes and observe people at work, searching the universe for answers.

Alison C — Google review

I attended a star party and enjoyed the heck out of myself. Mind the javelinas...they're cute but they don't think you are.The person who led the star party was so knowledgeable, kind to the kiddos asking questions, and made the evening one to remember.Being able to try out the different telescopes was so neat. I saw Saturn and Jupiter for the first time with my own eyes - core memory for sure!I want to go back for a solar viewing, but I'm also a physics student so I want to go back for lots of reasons. ;)

Tiffiny C — Google review

I did not do enough pre study for the visit. We were only able to see the outside of the building besides the visitor center. They offer different tours, make sure you get one you are really interested in.

老Laoxi — Google review

We really enjoyed the solar viewing and getting to view two telescopes. The hosts were super informative. We will be back for the night viewing.

Lisa B — Google review

We took the day tour of the 2 larger telescopes today and the tour was phenomenal! Shannon did an amazing job of explaining everything and answering questions. He is very knowledgeable of it all and it was a true learning experience.

Frankie H — Google review

Highly recommend: they have presentations three times per week with tours and night time star watching. Visitors Center with plenty of information, educational, perspective, and bathrooms. Live viewing of the sun. You can visit the two sites of the telescopes both within two miles on tops of two different mountains

Closed on Sundays (which is when we visited,) but well worth the visit even though we couldn't enter any of the buildings. Great views and interpretive info at various points around the grounds. Glad we made the detour.

The Sky is the Limit here!! I had this observatory on my Bucket List for decades. Every time I drove through the Van Horn area, I knew the McDonald Observatory was close by. I finally made made it here. I was amazed at the technology that has been invested by UT Austin. I knew the McDonald Observatory was famous for its MONSTER TELESCOPES, but I didn't know the history behind this science tech center. It is has some of the most advanced telescopes in the WORLD. The Frank N. Bush Visitors Center is really great. It has great information on the Celestial Skies and the historical development of the McDonald Observatory. If you are a scientifically curious person, this place is a must. I attended the STAR PARTY presentation at 7 pm. It was pretty good. While it appeared the cloudy skies was to ruin my evening visit, the skies cleared up by 8 pm and participants were able to see Jupiter, Saturn, and a two-star constellation first hand! I will say that they need to improve on their day tour. I wish they provided a little more access to the inner workings of the magnificent telescopes. Hope you make the visit yourself! :-)

Great info! Clean lots of parking, used the shuttle it was filled to capacity. Think it’s best to have more shuttles on stand by to ferry all who want to use this service.

Jimmy V — Google review

I have been through the observatory before, so I know it's interesting... But that was 20 years ago. It's really changed. I did not think there was an entry fee. But that did not matter because they are not open Sundays or Mondays. On our way to El Paso, we swung by on a Sunday. There was no one around and everything was closed. We drove up, walked around the observatories and enjoyed the views. Maybe next time we will go to a star party.

It's alright, mostly carp infested and nowhere near as deep as it says...I dropped my anchor several times all over and it ranged from 7-9ft, good place to get away from hodessa

Had a great time primitive camping here! We were only here for the night before going to balmorhea state pool the next day. Fish were jumping in the waters at night time so I threw a rod out, which was like midnight, and was able to hook up twice but only land this little guy. I was fishing on the south side of the lake.In the morning there was so many cows in the water and along the shoreline which was quite pleasing to admire. One of the biggest downside about staying here was the pricing to camp. We ended up paying $38 dollars for two people! 😳 quite pricey.Restrooms were not the cleanest unfortunately with spiders in them.Might comeback with friends maybe in the future but it’s the cost that’ll keep me away. Some State parks up north in New Mexico charge $10 for the vehicle… not per person. In one of the pictures below are the rates charges for whatever you plan on doing (:

Park

Davis Mountains State Park Headquarters is a prime destination for outdoor enthusiasts, offering opportunities for hiking, biking, and camping in a picturesque setting. The park's landscape was shaped by volcanic activity millions of years ago, resulting in the formation of the Davis Mountains. Unlike neighboring mountain ranges, the area is sustained by an extensive network of springs that feed into creeks, creating a lush environment.

Excellent camping spot, with nice trails. I'd recommend it if you want to have good amenities, great views, and love hiking. You're not exactly "braving it", but it's so much nicer for families and pets this way.

Gabriel L — Google review

I love this place. The night skies are amazing; the hiking is solid with a good mix of shorter and longer trails. Some campsites can be a bit of a walk from restrooms/showers, so if proximity is important, it’s worth checking the map when you make reservations. Restrooms and shower facilities are always super clean. The park staff is helpful and friendly.Fort Davis is close enough for a quick grocery run.Highly recommend the evening star party at the McDonald Observatory- it’s amazing.

This state park is Awesome! Super clean bathroom and showers. This park is well taken care of with attention to details like painted posts manicured areas with an amazing bird watching area like no other. The people who manage this place should get recognized and compensated for all the hard work and effort it takes to run such a beautiful park.

Mark W — Google review

We love this park, there are sites sizes for all kinds of rigs, there are full hookups as well as elec and water only and also tent camping with water in the area or at the site. We come at least once a year as it is a long drive to get here. The trails are fun and challenging. Ft Davis Is in town with lots of history and some fun trails as well. Gas station hotel and restaurants in town a short drive. Indian Lodge is on the park grounds, we have stayed there as well and it’s quite enjoyable. A short drive from the parking is The McDonals Observatory, they have star parties check with them before going as Covid-19 has changed everything up.

A Texas gem! My family of 8 visited here last week and it was a great experience. The rangers made sure we understood the risks of hiking and camping in the backcountry including giving us ideas for contingency plans should things get dangerous. We had an excellent time. It was at least 20° cooler there than anywhere else we wanted to visit in Texas. We will be back!

Leigh W — Google review

We absolutely loved this state park and have plans to come back. We stayed an entire week tent camping. Ms Lisa and Mr Mac were the most hospitable park parks we have ever meet. The interim superintendent, Amy was so sweet too. We hiked and saw the near by attractions such the McDonald observatory and the Chihuahua Desert Research center. It really was a relaxing stay.My only con was that since the Indian lodge was closed for renovations we were not able to buy park merch such as magnets and hiking medallions.

I can't say enough about this place! I spent 4 days there and I had a great time. They have clean bathrooms warm in the mornings for your showers, a great staff, a ton of wildlife. There's usually a breeze during the day at this time of year. At the end of April it was not hot. It was perfect. They have a lot of hiking trails. Don't miss the Observatory Star Gazing! I just had a great great time and will return.

Janice R — Google review

We stayed here for a week in one of the RV sites, not the full hookup sites because they were all booked. There seemed to be some drainage issues with the hoses and tanks possibly due to the RV not being completely level as the ground wasn't level and us not having anything to fix that. Otherwise it was a totally pleasant place to stay. We didn't get to hike many trails but the ones we went on were nice and the bird blinds are pretty good. The scenery was absolutely beautiful, the Skyline drive was a must see.

Campsites are spacious, showers are clean, not very busy, only about 20 minutes from the grocery store and downtown, host was friendly, not too many bugs but a ton of bees and wasps, roads are paved and the driveways are firm, all sites have a fire ring with a grill, overall a really nice camping spot.

Great location! Make sure you take 17 to get there absolutely. Gorgeous. Some of tent sites are along the main road to the lodge (which is closed) and heavily trafficked during open hours. Good shade and excellent facilities.

Beautiful place to camp. Amazing views and cell service from skyline dr. Wifi not so good in the campground but it's available. Water and electric at all sites and sewer at a few.

Jason K — Google review

We camped overnight there and it was lovely. We love the smell of bacon and coffee outdoors in the morning. The campgrounds were exceptionally clean. The sites were all spacious and some with electricity. A great bonus for charging devices. There were not alot if people which was nice and peaceful too.The only drawback was the flies. Lots of them. So I recommend a screen tent if you're cooking outdoors or if you just want to chill in nature without being bothered by flies. But we are definitely going back but better prepared next time. We loved how beautiful it was.

We have a 34 ft travel trailer and it did not fit in many sites here. The sites it would fit in were mostly reserved. This seems to be a popular spot even though it's the middle of nowhere and December. Bunch of trails to hike on, buildings to watch birds, scenic road to drive up and see the view. Was windy one day, but this park is protected with hills all around it, hence the no cell service! Starlink worked fine. Night sky is so bright and clear. There is a famous observatory up the road but we did not go. Fort davis NP is a must stop, really well done.

There are numerous trails of all levels of difficulty. Great views. The interpretive programs were terrific and frequent, one or two programs per day normally, and geared towards all ages. Close to several cute towns, McDonald Observatory, and Chihuahuan Desert Research Institute. Campsite was in great condition. Bird blinds are the best I've seen anywhere, complete with water features, feeding stations with various foods to attract a wide array of species, seating, shelter, and resources for bird identification.

Pretty park but trails are poorly marked. I met many people on the trail who said they had no idea where they were or if they were still on a trail. We ended up finding the road and just using it to walk back. Not fun when you expect to find the scenic route to watch the sunset. Also there's not a way to reach a ranger after 5:00 if you get lost or hurt. You can only leave a message or call 911.

Beautiful scenic views. You have to drive from Fort Davis to Prada Marfa for the 505 Rd and stop at the point of rocks. The other must visit is to the McDonald's Observatory on the highest elevation of Texas.

Historical place museum

Sights & Landmarks

Fort Davis National Historic Site is a well-preserved former frontier military post that operated from 1854 to 1891. The site features meticulously preserved adobe and brick buildings showcasing artifacts of daily life in a Western fort. Visitors can explore the Chihuahuan Desert Research Institute, located nearby, which offers an array of desert-related attractions including an arboretum, greenhouse, mining exhibit, and hiking trail.

Really cool place although it was actually about 95F when I went. There is a museum, park gift shop, film, nice rangers, and a lot of walking paths. The infirmary is currently being restored and the porch looks fabulous on it so far. I tried to go hiking, but the heat was too much for me.

Henry M — Google review

This place is so awesome with plenty of furnishings from back when the fort was actually inhabited by soldiers in the late 1860s with plenty of information about what life was like in those times from rationing food to medical treatment. It looks like they're actively trying to restore many of the buildings while still retaining their original weathering in some parts to show the state that the buildings were in prior to restoration. Beautiful little piece of history to enjoy.

Randy E — Google review

Nice visitors center/history museum exhibit. Many buildings at this National Historic site that dates back to 1854-1891 have been refurbished. Nice walking, self-guided tour. Close to City of Fort Davis, Texas and McDonald Observatory.

Stephen B — Google review

Incredibly well maintained, organized historic site with plenty of hands on exhibits for kids inside and plenty of room to walk around and explore what it was like to live at a frontier fort during the 1800s. The park rangers (especially Lee) were extremely knowledgeable and took time to talk to my family about the park and about the National Park Service. I highly recommend checking out this park and visiting when you’re in the area.

Sarah P — Google review

Visited December 30, 2021An interesting look into the old West. What impressed me most was the size of the fort and the lack of a barricade wall. Most of the buildings onsite are in disrepair. However there are a few buildings which can be toured. There is small museum in the enlisted barracks. And another enlisted barracks gives insight into the conditions in which they lived. The hospital is another area which provides insight into the past. There are the remains of buildings as well.My wife and I spent a couple of hours on the grounds and enjoyed it.

Ssmith5359 — Google review

So great if you like history!! We spent 3 hours here but could have spent more. Our boys completed the thorough Jr ranger badge booklet. Visitor's center is very informative. There's a lot of walking and reading that covered a large piece of land. We have a pass so it was free for our family to get in, but otherwise there is a cost.

Kelly G — Google review

This place is definitely a must see if you are in the area. The grounds and buildings have been extremely well preserved. There are several buildings you can walk through that have been kept well maintained and with their period and original furnishings. The hospital is definitely not to be missed. It's the big building in the back. At first I thought it wasn't part of the park/open, but it is and probably one of the most well kept buildings. It was a bit eerie though and I did get chills walking through it. I would plan a couple hours for this visit altogether.

Lisa W — Google review

Decided to go here to break up the drive between Big Bend and Guadalupe NPs. Lots of explanation to make the history come alive. My kids enjoyed it. Absolutely make your way here.

Fort Davis is one our most favorite places to go to. I go almost every time I am in the area. From hiking to roaming around the Fort. I am looking forward the reactions that are starting back up. Have loved them in the past. We even hiked from Davis Mountain State Park to the Fort this past weekend with a 2.5 and 4 yo.

Shereen B — Google review

I love historical sites and I’ve been to a decent amount of them, this one is one of the few that’s better than most of them. It was interesting to walk around the fort. There’s lots of restored buildings that make you feel like you’re in 1800s. There’s a lot of love put into this place. Very cool.

Uilicix — Google review

Neat place! Highly recommend going in the visitor center & checking out the museum. They also have a 15 minute video that explains the history. It is a big area to walk, which can get HOT because there is little shade, so planning the time to go is wise. They have one golf cart for use if available to those who need it. There is also a trail you can check out, but we didn't go, because silly me wore flip flops. I didn't realize they had trails here too.

Angela ( — Google review

Outstanding place! I was planning to stop by for an hour and ended up spending 4hrs! One of the greatest short somewhat intense hikes I had (around 2 miles). Astounding views from the trail, I highly recommend going on it! The fort is nicely reconnected (partially-work on progress), they even have loud speakers playing military drill sounds periodically! It makes you feel very emerged! If you are in the area it's a must to stop by!

Amazing piece of the history of the American West. Helpful staff, exhibits, lots of outdoor walking under a towering mountain, hiking trail, picnic area. Actual restored buildings.Reasonable entrance fee. RV parking, dogs allowed on leash, bathrooms, water available. If you go in summer, go very early. Recommended.

Beautiful park! Well preserved ruins and rebuilt buildings with genuine artifacts. Nice little museum with hands on exhibits and things for kids to do. Good movie. Clean bathrooms. Knowledgeable people at Visitor Center. We took a great walk around the grounds, almost 2 miles.

Nice historic site. Went with a school group and got a very informative guided tour. They have done a good job of restoring many of the buildings and there is a small museum at the visitor center.

What a gem! We were camping at Davis Mountains State Park and decided to hop over here for an afternoon and I'm so glad we did! The park staff was so knowledgeable and kind, and our time walking around the grounds was great. The reconstruction and refurnishing that they've done is truly impressive. Looking into the commanding officer's house truly felt like someone from the time period was going to come walking in the door at any moment. If you have a free afternoon, I highly recommend stopping here.

Amelia T — Google review

Excellent history museum and fort. The fort buildings are being renovated with several furnished. History of the soldiers lives and military activities are well told. There is a 20 minute video giving a great historical background of the fort. Many original cannons and guns on display. Really enjoyed the military hospital and stories on actual people’s treatments. We were there about 2 1/2 hours. Beautiful scenic location by Davis mountains.

Fort Davis National Historic Site is a fascinating place to spend a few hours learning about the history of the area and the challenges people faced as they traveled west along the old San Antonio-El Paso Road. As you wander around the Fort, it's evident how much effort the dedicated staff puts into preserving the historic structures scattered across the grounds. Informative plaques and displays are plentiful, providing rich historical context. For hiking enthusiasts, there's a rewarding loop trail that starts from the Fort grounds and ascends the North Ridge, offering a fantastic overhead view of the area. The loop through Hospital Canyon is about 3.3 miles, making for a wonderful, meandering stroll. The beautifully maintained grounds are dotted with interesting tidbits of information, and the slight elevation gain during the climb is manageable if you take your time. The view from the top is definitely worth the effort!A crucial tip: bring plenty of water! Don't underestimate the summer heat, even on a short trail.

Wonderfully preserved history of the old West. Nice knowledgeable staff, beautiful stain scenery and well restored buildings.

A great job of re-creating what the fort was like . We easily spent a couple of hours reading and looking at everything. Plus a lovely walk to a lookout up above.Definitely worth stopping in

Great park. Well preserved and laid out. Nice junior ranger program for my toddler and he loved getting his first badge. Dog friendly which is great and RV parking available. Rangers were super friendly and helpful

This is the best restored fort in the southwest! Definitely a great place to visit. It is pet friendly. The staff is really helpful, especially Ranger Sebastian. Plan to spend the night on Alpine.

So much history and beauty at this location. We ventured from Marfa, Texas to visit and were really blown away at the experience. I highly suggest going into the visitor center and watching the film. It was a suprise to see none other than Kareem Abdul-Jabbar narrating the entire history of Fort Davis in a cowboy hat 😂 it was very interesting hearing him talk about the history. Then go wonder a bit and then sit down and stop for a minute… just look around at the buildings still standing and overall land… no doubt this will lead you to imagine what it was like back then. Next, take a hike to the top of the ridge or back toward the dried up meandering river in the left side of the property and enjoy your day👍🏻

Susanne V — Google review

Objectively, the park is clean and provides information on American History that I personally was unaware of.Subjectively, I did find it hard to sit through the video as it seemed to glorify the attack on Native Americans that occurred during that time. The trip to Fort Davis was worth the time I spent but not my favorite National Park.

Mike H — Google review

History abounds at this beautiful old fort . Someone has done an exceptional job in restoration efforts. Work yet to be done. Can hardly wait . Second visit and still bowled over by it . If you love Western history , this should be on your bucket list !

One of the stops on our road trip list. Nicely maintained and insteresting sites. Learnt some history and life at the fort. I never though life at a fort can be so luxurious for the officer's family.

We saw this place on google and wanted to check it out. Make sure you have cash we had just enough thankfully but this is a cash only stop. Once we went in we started to look around there was the kids there saying the snakes names and saying they are always cranky it was kind of cute. I dont want to run into a snake anywhere else but they are all so interesting to look at and see the difference between the different kinds. The lady even said there is over 90 snakes/rattlesnakes. We will be bringing our kids by next time we come through Fort Davis

Diana F — Google review

Cool roadside attraction in Fort Davis with an impressive rattlesnake collection. The guy that owns the place has nearly all venomous snakes of Texas in his collection along with a good amount of out of state snakes and some inverts. It'll take you about 15 minutes to slowly make your way through the entire collection. The place is a bit tourist-trappy but then again so is almost everything in Fort Davis. Worth a stop if you're passing through town though.

For five bucks this is worth a stop in. I had an hour to burn between dinner and a star party at the observatory. They have a great collection of snakes, spiders and other things to give you nightmares. All the snakes were easy to view. You could probably spend anywhere from 15 min to an hour depending if you just want to look or read every description.

John W — Google review

The winter hours are different than the ones posted on Google. The owner left the corrected hours and their number on the door, when we texted they were very responsive. Bring cash for the tickets, my 6yo really enjoyed their snake room.

Maria R — Google review

Neat little stop in the small town of Fort Davis. The museum is small but has numerous rattlesnakes and a few spiders. There are signs over each snake giving you information. You will most likely hear the rattles. Don't be surprised if you find a couple that lunge towards the glass at you (usually the smaller ones). The lady at the counter was friendly. The experience would have been more fun if there was more interaction with staff (instead of walking around alone feeling an awkward silence). It was still neat though. Admission was $5 for adults.

Alli R — Google review

Awesome, quirky, a Ft. Davis staple for us. The owner is super knowledgeable and always a good time to conversate with. Last trip in the Mojave was extra spicy which gave me a great opportunity to teach my kid what a defensive stance in a rattle snake looks like. Always worth a stop in to check out the snakes!

Michael B — Google review

Google shows they’re closed but they are actually open. We drove by and saw their open sign lit up. They have a huge collection of snakes and most are venomous. They also are cash only but do have cheap entry fees: $7 for adults and $5 for kids 10 & under.

Kelly D — Google review

Very clean kept snakes. Didn't realize there were so many different kinds of rattlesnakes. They did have a couple of non venomous snakes for sale.

Diane K — Google review

Very cool place if you like rattlesnakes. Owner wasn't very nice and answered all questions. It's a very small venue but worth a visit if you like rattlesnakes.

Shane M — Google review

Real fun place if you like snakes, especially rattlesnakes. Kinda small, but plenty to look at. Definitely worth the $5 investment.

Chris K — Google review

Didn't live up to the hype. My review may be biased being born and raised in the desert. But being that we live somewhat close this may have been a spot we visited often. Sorry it just wasn't worth it to me. The room was chilly. I hope the snakes get something more than those tiny enclosures.

Passing through on a road trip, I spent a few days in the area and used the library a few times. The staff were helpful and the wifi easy to use though like many of the libraries in the area, requires a password to gain access. The historic building that houses the library is a wonderful throwback to the turn of the last century. It started out as a mercantile, added imposing bars over the windows and doors after a break in, and eventually became the library.

Such a cute, historic little community library. I love that they have a children's section with toys to play with and they have a book store that you can donate whatever $ you want to take home books for good. The people are friendly and you can tell it is one of the heartbeats of Fort Davis. They also have a lounge that you can read or work in as long as you'd like.It is a small building so they don't have an extensive collection but they have enough to help you entertained if you love to read!

Always friendly and welcoming! I am not a resident of Fort Davis but I visit the library each time I go. Staff is great and they make it easy for visitors to enjoy the library as well! They often have book sales not based on a price but on donations. A small way to give back!

Well worth the visit! Hiked the Modesto Canyon trail and visited the Botanical Garden and Cactus Museum. Overlook from the Pollinator Garden boasts a panoramic view of the area.

A must-visit for anyone who remotely enjoys plants and nature. Great value for the entry fee. Loved the cactus museum and the native grasses sections of the botanical garden. (I didn’t visit the pollinator garden.) Apparently, there is arboretum reciprocity with other Texas arboretums. Membership here seems to be the way to go if you regularly visit your home arboretum. The hikes are gorgeous as well. We did the overlook trail. We got a bit turned around due to the trail material (extrusive igneous rock!), but we saw some great views in the meantime. Small and decently-curated gift shop. Absolutely will visit again.

Absolutely worth it if you love botanical gardens. The Chihuahuan desert is so unique and here you get to see plants you might not even if you were to crisscross the rio grande a dozen times.

Wonderful facility. The cactus collection is outstanding, and had many in bloom when we visited at the end of March. The botanical garden and pollinator gardens were well laid out but not yet in bloom We also hiked the Modesta Canyon trail, a strenuous but beautiful hike with an informative trail guide.

We wandered through the gardens. The various trees and plants are well labeled. Make you you go all the way to the back to see the building with the cacti, it was the best part of the place.

We have been to Fort Davis 3 times but this is our first trip to the Research Institute. We have been missing out. This place was great. We walked all around the botanical, cactus, and pollinator gardens. The mining exhibit was really interesting. We also took a hike down to the spring in the canyon. It was a great hike, although the area had been experiencing a lot of rain, and there was actually water in the canyon prior to the spring itself. We will definitely be back to hike more on our next visit to Fort Davis.

If you like cactus, this is the place! Very nice trails with plants identified and spots to sit and reflect.Nice visitor center with space to sit down, relax and enjoy the view.Somewhat handicap accessible. The trails are pea gravel and on a gentle grade. If you are on wheels, you should have fat tires or it will be tiresome to traverse.Mining heritage exhibit is nice too. Would be good for the kids.I’m told the actual hiking trails are spectacular, with views to match.

Highly recommend: strolled 1.8 mile Modesta Canyon trail with photos attached. Visitors Center with bathrooms, plenty of information and map of trails.

Jim R — Google review

$6.50/adult was the cost when I went SEP 2022Great place to get outta the city at. There's four different hiking trails that vary in difficulty. There's a botanical gardens of native species. In the gardens, they have a cactus greenhouse as well. Right before the gardens, there's a bird blind.Trails are well marked.Thank you all at the visitors center for the info. Extremely insightful as to what I should be keeping my eyes peeled for. They mentioned that there were aoudas (?) and mainly birds out. Though when I was leaving, I was told there was a bobcat sighting. I asked about snake 'n' other little critters that can cause harm if I'm not paying attention. They informed me that they're not common at all-- especially during mid-day.The visitors center has a gift shop. A ton of books that are geared towards outdoors, the Chihuahuan desert, and plants. They have stickers, cups, shirts, field guides, 'n' more. There's a bathroom, a water fountain, and a station to refill water bottles. Drinking tap water is safe-- per what I was told. My water bottle was too big to fill at the station so they let me use the tap in their kitchen.I did not see the mining exhibit this time around. Nor did I walk through the gardens to see what's changed. The trails were where I wentWhat I found really cool is how they're trying hard to be as renewable as possible. Their lights are powered by a solar panel on grounds. They also redirect rain water to help increase biodiversity.

Jeremiah M — Google review

Really cool place! Highly recommend. We spent about 5 hours there hiking and checking out the gardens and green house. Nice visitor center. Very helpful staff. You must do Clayton's overlook trail. Cool 360° display of mountains and volcanic history. Easy trail. We hiked the outer loop trail which starts with Modesta canyon, then winds around Lions head and past the old quarry. Then it brings you to Claytons overlook. Overall around 2.5 miles moderate to strenuous. The hardest part was going down and up through the canyon. The greenhouse was awesome, over 200 species of cacti. The mine museum was very interesting as well nice displays of different types of ores and old mine equipment. I can't think of any negatives at all.

Duane H — Google review

Enjoyable trail in gardens, interesting greenhouse of cactus varieties. Nice visitor center and shop, worth a stop.

Beth S — Google review

The Botanical Gardens are stunning. Plan for at least 2 hours to see all of the exhibits. This is a photographer’s dream. Check out my pics please. The hiking trails are rugged, take the hikes seriously and wear sturdy boots if you have them. Pack lots of water and enjoy the wilderness.

Incredible place to visit to soak in the beautiful desert scenery and see so many cacti you never knew existed! A great spot for kids to explore nature. We did the outer loop trail and visited the cactus greenhouse and had an outstanding time. The Presidio County Courthouse, a stunning building located in the heart of Marfa, is a must-see landmark. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, this courthouse offers visitors the opportunity to explore its interior and admire the phenomenal craftsmanship.

Einmalig !!!(Translated by Google)I walked over to the courthouse from the Paisano Hotel very early in the morning. I had to wait a few more minutes because it was closed. After it opened, a friendly employee opened the upper area for me so that I could take a look at Marfa from above. The craftsmanship is phenomenal! If you have an appreciation for historical architecture, this might be a place to see. There is a little bit of history here-- as you walk through the hallways you get the feeling what it it might have been like to be here 100+ years ago. The original chairs in the hallway make you wonder about who sat there-- attorneys, famous lawmen, victims, and of course, criminals! But first and foremost, the wood work and craftsmanship is great. The stairwells and other examples of carpentry is impressive! :-)

I came to visit the courthouse as I like old things and history. The architecture is amazing and the woodwork is in and of itself nice to look at. I walked and and went up three flights of stairs to an area they had open with pictures of the courthouse that were very old. There was another flight of stairs that led me up to the top which has an amazing 360 degree view. Well worth the time.

I'm from Los Angeles, CA so visiting Marfa, TX was a huge culture shock to a city boy like myself! The courthouse (along with the rest of the town) is frozen in time, all wood interior, small, and the floors creek when you walk inside. There's huge trees just outside the courthouse that drop pecans! I cracked one open and ate it, yuuumm! Best part about the courthouse is they allow you to walk up to the very top to oversee all of Marfa! When you first walk into the courthouse take a left into the first door and theres a small room where people register their cars, in here theres license plates plastered on the wall and an old bank vault. The staff is awesome and friendly and let me take photos in there.

Immerse yourself in the world of minimalist artist Donald Judd by visiting the Judd Foundation, a non-profit organization that offers public access to Judd's living and working spaces in Marfa. The foundation provides guided tours of his studios, libraries, and living quarters, offering insight into the diversity of his work. While much of Judd's work is housed at the Chinati Foundation, a visit to his in-town residence provides a deeper understanding of the artist.

Very nice but don’t touch the aluminum boxes or take photos unless you wanna be shot by the tour guide

Myself and some friends took a tour of the Judd Foundation on our trip to Marfa and had an amazing time. The pace of the tour was excellent; it didn't feel like we were being rushed through and there was plenty of time to explore the space. The selection of Judd merchandise is also great. Our tour guide did a wonderful job!

Nora D — Google review

I took two different Donald Judd tours and had two different experiences. The first tour was wonderful, for the guide took time for questions and provided researched based explanations. He was able to inform between fact and inferences. This guy was a younger gentlemen. However, the second tour was rapid. He did not pause nor give time for questions. Rather, you had to stop him midway and ask a questions. Sometimes you were met with what appeared to be agitation, and other times with blanket statements. This guide was older and wore cowboy boots and a hat.The younger tour guide was modest. The guide would let you know what was the extent of his thinking rather than a blunt statement. The older tour guide would get mad if you asked a question to something he already answered. He didn't understand that the human mind can only hold so much things at one time, and breathing space is necessary to have a thoughtful dialogue about what we guest are not experts in.The four stars are for the younger guide.

Evan V — Google review

You can walk here from basically anywhere in town. It's a really fun tour to do whether you're a Judd fan or not. Looking into an artist's domicile and work space like that is always cool and he lived in a very interesting way. His archive collection is amazing and you get to see some works and his living area as well.

Amy M — Google review

You really have to experience Judd’s work here, as everything has been carefully curated as the artist himself intended. Plus Marfa has its own vibe that distinguishes places like MOMA. If you are a Judd fan, it’s absolutely a must-see!

Jun D — Google review

Interesting and informative would be the two best adjectives I would use to describe the docents of our two separate tours. The only recommendation I would have would be to somehow abbreviate the background info given at the beginning of each. This ended up being 30 min of redundancy. At least the info shared was identical at each presentation! Otherwise, worth the time and money.

Donald D — Google review

In 1991, Judd purchased the Print Building—previously home to a bank, a post office, and the Crews Hotel, located on Highland Avenue in downtown Marfa—with the intention of installing twenty-eight rooms on the top floor with the complete collection of his prints, which he had earlier set aside for such a display. He installed two large works in anodized aluminum on the ground floor from his exhibition at the Staatliche Kunsthalle Baden-Baden, Germany (August 27–October 15, 1989). We had a lovely chat with her before enjoying the museum exhibits, which were well curated and so much fun to see. This was definitely a highlight of our trip!

Wonderful local history! The ladies at the entrance were really pleasant and helpful. The collection is well managed and beautifully displayed! (Didn't take many photos because I was so intrigued with everything that I forgot to do so until our last few minutes there... LOL There are many good photos already posted in other reviews here.)PS... It's free!

I enjoyed this little but free museum. Was a good stop to stretch our legs a little too.

The lady at the front was so sweet and knowledgeable. Full of small town history and unique things. Definitely worth the 30 minutes we spent walking through

Ballroom Marfa is a contemporary museum housed in a converted dance hall, offering a constantly changing exhibition program featuring works by both established and emerging artists from around the world. The venue also commissions site-specific pieces, such as the stone circle inspired by prehistoric monuments. Visitors can expect to encounter diverse art forms and experiences, including classes, film screenings, and presentations dedicated to exploring contemporary art and culture.

Very interesting! They change the art every 6 months so the exhibit I saw today will be here until April 2020. Check it out while you can!

Kayla P — Google review

The Latinx art currently on display was beautiful and intriguing.Would prefer traditional artwork labels on the walls, though. The description booklet was not super intuitive, and required too much flipping back and forth through pages to match the piece’s number to the description.

Unfortunately, they wouldn’t allow us into the museum without a mask. 😷

I visited Ballroom Marfa specifically to view their latest and greatest exhibition, "Mariposa Relampago" by Guadalupe Maravilla. It is a stunning sight to behold! I also really enjoyed the current exhibit in the gallery, "Perhaps the Truth." Both are definitely worth a visit!

Not worth the trip, expense Or misguided hype, if it is even open, like area of country and community it is within which has more in common with undeveloped or war tore Middle East but less clean than what is commonly associated with Texas Desert. Proof that Marfa, Not California #2 or Vt #3, is the rotten underbelly of the Art World. Continue on Intestate 10 East to more sober and stable environments.

Showed up around 11pm it took about an hr for me to see some lights. I tried my best to capture the lights on camera. I did not stay longer because it got super cold 🥶. Very cool spot to check out. They have a little deck where you can sit down to view them.

Nice viewing area for the Marfa Lights. Found myself with cool weather, pizza, and Red Bull while waiting for the sunset. Good and interesting crowd at night when I was there. We were all doubting and wondering if we saw something but it was good fun overall.Restroom facility too.

Unfortunately the lights weren’t active during my visit in Marfa, nonetheless this spot was quite breathtaking and the visitor center building was very cool

Sharing details for the future/first time travellers. This place is located on Marfa-Alpine highway (US 90)Detailed signs are kept on either sides before a mile and you can spot the same even during midnight.Based on research n experience, good time to visit is 10.30pm -1.30am, we stayed from 12.15am -1am and saw the mysterious lights multiple times but was difficult to capture in camera.(There were telescopes but was hard to focus at night).Lights appeared in once in 5-10mins intervals and multiple lights emerged in a time merging into one and disappearing as mentioned. This place is in middle of nowhere and was hard to understand the phenomenon.Limited parking space with details of the Marfa lights is located at entrance wheelchair accessible parking.Group of 20people consisting of 2families were also there on a Saturday night so didnt feel any safety concern.Have a good stay and visit.Wish you good experience to see the Marfa mysterious lights. #HappyVisiting

Deepak — Google review

Always a great place to stop and stretch your legs. I have been here 4x. I have seen the light 3 out of 4 times. Tonight, bright white, shifting blue and some tinted reds bobbing near the horizon, rising and the "dancing" in small circles till they fade out and move. There are clean restrooms, no electricity, and a fair about of visitors. Many will overnight in the parking lot as they travel east or west. I've slept here twice. The highway noise can be annoying, but it's free parking and the night skies are amazing!! Tonight there a nice breeze and I can see lightening on the horizon up near Fort Stockton.

David L — Google review

While we didn't see the marfa lights, we loved coming to the viewing station at sunset and staying to star watch.Just a lovely place.

Katherine S — Google review

Very exciting for first time visit. Weather was a bit drizzly so didn’t make for a long stay. Didn’t see anything crazy, but we’re a few lights. Taillights? Oil rigs? Seems like no one will ever know.

ROY T — Google review

Great stop and definitely worth the visit. Arrived at 10:30 and the lights were giving up a show. Didn’t think it was happening at first since the lights were white. But then I realized, how did they move across the sky. Then they multiplied. It was really cool.My visit got sidetracked when a guide started talking about complete non sense. Was frustrating to hear this loud annoying voice… But, others attending were chill and I loved the conversation hypothetical confessions. “What do you think they are?” “What do you think happens if you get closer?”

Grant D — Google review

I didn't see the real lights this time, but I did back in 2005. We did see car traffic south of marfa casting some explainable dancing lights.

David R — Google review

It was a good place to watch the sunset; being rather cloudy. But, I think it was just a normal evening. However, there are several interesting plaques to read so you can walk and stretch your legs. Gonna spend the night and then mosey down the highway tomorrow to Big Bend.

Debbie T — Google review

Cool little place to stop and walk around after driving a long ways. Neat little piece of history as well. We stopped during daylight hours, even though we were unable to view the lights as they are best seen at night I really enjoyed taking the time to get out and read the little monuments. It has a couple of picnic tables if you’re in need of a place to eat bite or rest your legs. Has several restroom stalls for both men and women with vault toilets, all had plenty of toilet paper and hand sanitizer dispensers. Looks like it is well maintained. Parking lot has plenty of room to park your motor home or travel trailer. If you’re ever in the area and drive by you definitely need to stop and at least read a little about the history in the area!

Brandi O — Google review

It's an interesting area, lots of history, a nice structure with bathrooms and binoculars to help you hone in on the lights. I was there during the day and didn't see any lights. Maybe on another trip I will be here at night... i appreciate they have built a nice monument to the phenomenon.

Trypp A — Google review

Photography tips:You ever see a bright shining full moon and think "wow, that'll be a cool picture!" Then, take a pic with your phone and the photo just doesn't do it justice? Ever! Just a heads up, that's what it's like trying to get pictures of the Marfa lights. Unless you have a photography setup with a telescopic lens, photo efforts are lackluster. However, it is worth a stop to see what's up. But I do recommend at least a pair of binoculars and some way to stabilize them. (I had to balance mine on a camera tripod to make it worth viewing through.) Once I did this, it made the viewing experience much more enjoyable. Don't rely on the stationary binoculars provided at the viewing area, they are trash.

Joe N — Google review

Went here back in January 2023 with family to view the Marfa Lights while we were visiting the McDonald Observatory for a star party. It was an awesome experience, but a very cold night!! We saw the lights from the binoculars they have at the place and it was spooky on how the lights were moving in different directions and getting dimmer and brighter in unpredictable patterns, who knows what could be causing these lights and how they do those things, could it be UFOs, ghost lights, atmospheric causes, cars passing by the highway, or something else?!! The Marfa Lights are a great stop that you must definitely do if you pass by the area either by going to Big Bend National Park or visiting the McDonald Observatory like we did or even stop by here if your going on a road trip somewhere else!! It’s worth it!!!

SuperMStudios — Google review

An unusually charming subject of Texas lore - Oh sure this state is known for its tall tales about Jackalopes and lassoing twisters but magical / mystical lights possibly from space aliens seems a bit of a stretch. It doesn’t matter because unlike a Jackalope - you can actually find the Marfa Lights of Texas, and the kind people of Texas have even set up a Viewing Area for you - free of cost. Just off the roadway you’ll have a chance to pull over and investigate this local phenomenon for yourself. You decide. Are the lights merely a reflection of motor vehicle headlights? Well no so fast ‘cause these lights were first reported in the 1880’s not the 1980’s so it can’t be a motor car. Could the lights be swamp gas, maybe but there’s no swamp out there. St. Elmo’s Fire? Possibly but local Apache’s claim it’s no saint but rather a long dead Apache Chief searching for lost tribesmen. Come on out and have a look see! Be advised you’ll be in company of some opinionated and passionate people. My son and I were standing near the binoculars mounted to the viewing area and a group told us we shouldn’t be standing there because we blocked their view. Now we were standing where the architects wanted us to stand - but go figure. My biggest complaint is that the Marfa Lights Viewing Area is much too close to the main road. Motorists pass by slowly and create both sound and light corruption of the area. I also think that the viewing area platform might benefit from a second elevated floor. Come on out, you decide.

Sinjin — Google review

We didn’t see any lights but that’s ok. We had a great time viewing the awesome sunset and star gazing. We went twice while we were in the area. The restrooms were clean. Viewing platform was nice.

Big Bend Brewing Co. is a must-visit in West Texas, offering a great selection of beers and a welcoming atmosphere. The brewery provides an excellent place to relax with indoor and outdoor seating options, making it perfect for enjoying a flight or pint while taking in the stunning views. While they don't serve food, visitors are welcome to bring their own, and the brewery is kid and dog-friendly. Located near Alpine, it's an ideal stop for anyone exploring the area around Big Bend National Park.

So many tasty beers that I can't get back here in San Antonio. I took my time and enjoyed them. The bartender was very friendly and welcoming, certainly helped turn around what had been a rough weekend. And of course the scenery was beautiful. Well worth the detour coming home from El Paso.

Great brewery! Very good selection of beers and also a great place to hang out. The views are great and they have several picnic tables inside and out to hangout and enjoy a flight or a pint. I really liked the gold pale ale. They don't serve food but you can bring some if you want. They're also kid and dog friendly which is nice. Definitely a place worth visiting if you're in Apline!

Must stop anytime we find ourselves in West Texas, going to Big Bend. Good beers, nice place...though it is a warehouse so hot in the summer and COLD in the winter. Alpine is close by as is Maria and all it’s cool weirdness. Don’t bypass Alpine though, it is bigger than you think and has a lot of personality!

Great craft brews! Friendly staff and peaceful atmosphere in Alpine, Texas! One of the best breweries in Texas.

Marco O — Google review

This is the best brewery you'll find in the area, and that's not a problem. Friendly bartenders help suggest the best brew for your taste. There's no food on site, but you can bring outside food in. It's a perfect way to get back to the world after camping and hiking in Big Bend.

Jim L — Google review

In the Texas heat the last thing you expect on the side of the road is a cold, fresh brewed beer... But Big Bend Brewing definitely delivers. The La Frontera is an amazing ipa that quenches the thirst and gives just the right amount of crisp afterbite of hops. The staff is friendly, knowledge and good at finding the right beer for you. Would definitely recommend coming in on a hot summer afternoon with family, friends, or the significant other.

Erin P — Google review

Beer was great, though the gal behind the counter needed some coaxing to even tell us about the brews, would have liked more background about the process and facility.

Parks

Alpine Dog Park is a compact yet pleasant park that offers a wide range of amenities for all visitors. It provides a diverse selection of facilities, ensuring that everyone's needs are met. While the park itself is beautiful, it should be noted that there might be some areas with sand burrs which could potentially cause issues such as flat tires if not careful. However, this did not diminish the enjoyment experienced by the dogs who seemed to have a great time in the park.

Took my kids to the skate park...really nice.

Lorraine C — Google review

Getting better since last visit. Not as many goat head burrs as last year.Water works and plenty of poop bags. Wish there were more customers. My dogs never get to socialize, we're always alone.

Kurt Z — Google review

Hard to find. It's beside the baseball fields but without any signs to direct you to the actual park. There was water there for the dogs and a god fence. There were a couple of dog agility props available. Separate areas for big and small dogs.

Mark D — Google review

My dogs enjoyed it! Just pick up after your dogs and you’ll be good

A C — Google review

Hard to find google maps says it’s right in the middle of the main road. If you get out and try to walk from the ball field closest to where maps drops you the field is covered in stickers. Patch of dirt once you find it but allows dogs to do what they need to off leash. People don’t pick up after dogs tho.

Kristen B — Google review

Pulled into the parking lot, and my dog was immediately limping, with burrs stuck in her paws. We didn't even make it to the dog park. It's also very difficult to locate.

These guys are amazing and wonderful to talk with while browsing the museum-like shop they've cultivated. Tons of Texas and other awesome artifacts found here! We will treasure our western wear and souvenirs. Worth a visit everytime... PS - there are real cheshire cats too!

Best antique store in the West. Russ who owns the place, wrote his dissertation in Texas spurs. His knowledge is deep and he shares it generously. He is also generous with his dragons horde of rocks, gems and skulls. He went out back to find me the perfect rams skull in the condition and price range that I was looking for. Then he offered my kids free geodes on our way out. After spending the week exploring far West Texas, including Big Bend National park, Russ and Cheshire Cat Antiques is what my kids talked about the most. And yes there are plenty of of cats to pet on the front porch.

The owners, Russ and Guy, are fantastic (hilarious, too!) they are sooo knowledgeable about every last thing in the store and learning all the history behind all their goodies was awesome. Highly recommend!!! Thanks Russ and Guy, yall made our trip and we can’t wait to come back!Love,Tiani and Spencer

Hands down the best antique shop I've ever been to! Has a little bit of everything but their rock and mineral collection is the most impressive I've ever seen. Definitely not your typical little old lady antique place!

Casey H — Google review

The owner was so nice and accommodating. When I told him I was buying amethyst crystals to take home for my grand children, he gave me two geodes for them to crack! They were so excited to open their "magic rocks "

Trisha L — Google review

We had a great time shopping here today! They have great antiques, but we stayed around for the rock collection! It was incredible and the prices were great! The owner went above and beyond talking to us about all the rocks and just gave great service! Will definitely come back any Rome we are in the area!

Ashley W — Google review

Sweetest staff! Had a great chat and picked up some amazing crystals. Very well-priced and high quality! :) will definitely drop by on the way back to Houston

Very nice, friendly guy working there. Really cool interesting finds, wish I had alloted more time. Was able to make off with a pair of black lizard skin boots. Definitely stop by if you are passing through to Marfa (which is what we did).

The Museum of the Big Bend, located on North Harrison Street in Alpine, offers a deep dive into the rich history of the Big Bend Region. The museum showcases the human history of the area, from Native American inhabitants to Spanish missionaries, Mexican influences, and American pioneers during westward expansion. Visitors can explore well-curated displays, artifacts, and vintage items that vividly depict the city's history.

Great clean museum with lots of Big Bend history as far back as prehistoric times. It's like stepping into a timeline. Lots of beautiful artwork too. A must see in Alpine Texas.

The place had neat little exhibits, it was a cool little run through of the history of the big benfld area. It was rather small though. The two extra exhibits were okay.

A very interesting museum awaits you on the Sul Ross University in Alpine, Texas. History and art exhibits are world class. A quick drive from my camp at Fort Davis State Park campgrounds! There is plenty to see in town, plus an awesome selection of dining options!

Jerrold K — Google review

It’s really small but good to learn about Big Bend history. We spend hardly one hour. Staff was really friendly.

Rashmi K — Google review

Highly recommend to stop by if you happen to be in Alpine. Museum has a lot of unique pieces and cool scenes. What is also really nice is that they have interactive stands with short videos, that provide information about the exhibition.

What an amazing experience! I had no idea that Hoss Cartwrite graduated from Sul Ross University. Everything in the museum (from the paintings to the exhibits and maps) tells a gorgeous and impressive story of the Big Bend region. It's a must visit location!

Great little museum on the Sul Ross campus. Very friendly staff and great gift store. The museum gives a nice history of the Big Bend area from the dinosaurs to now. Beautiful art and map rooms as well. Well worth the stop!

Very informative. Great information regarding the life and times of the Big Bend area. Wonderful displays.

This place is awesome. Don't forget to walk to Garden out by the side. It takes you all the way up the the cliff. Everybody was nice and I loved the history. I recommend stopping by here!

Chris W — Google review

Terrific museum covers the Big Bend region’s history and geology and a bit of art. I was fortunate to be there for a special exhibit of Andy Warhol’s “Cowboys and Indians” but even without that it was worth the stop.

Rebecca C — Google review

We were at the museum for over 3 hours. It’s an amazing place to visit in Alpine. Information on Big Bend region of Texas, historic maps of Texas, gift shop, all on the campus of Sul Ross.

Linda L — Google review

Came to visit the area in a February and wound up spending some time in this museum. Enjoyed the free visit. Not a huge place, but definitely full of information and insights of the college and surrounding area. The full life-sized flying dinosaur (sorry, can't spell it!) was very impressive as was the fossilized bones of just ONE enormous wing. The usual cowboy, frontier, and old-time exhibits were also around to be enjoyed and to learn. Definitely a fun & interesting place to spend the time and if I had young kids it would be a MUST see spot.

Grouse K — Google review

This is a wonderful small museum that will give you an overview of the Big Bend area's cultural and natural history. They had a recent expansion to accommodate more art exhbits, and we had the pleasure to view a retrospective of Graciela Inturbide's stunning photographs.

Krin T — Google review

Was just passing though on vacation and had to stay in town longer than expected, trying to kill time and found the museum. The lady at the front was so nice, one of the nicest people we’ve met on our vacation so far! The museum and little gift shop was great, loved all the exhibits. So glad we stopped by!

Joanna W — Google review

This place was small, but packed with information. It’s expanding on march as well. The best part was the nice front desk lady. If you’re looking for a nice history lesson, this is a good spot.

Justin R — Google review

One of the very best museums I have seen. Very well organized and friendly.

Gloria C — Google review

Nice, small museum. The new addition is art work but still very nice.My grandchildren enjoy going there also.

Shereen B — Google review

Great small town feel museum. Learned a good deal more about the area and Texas. I especially enjoyed the art exhibits.

Michele S — Google review

Wonderful museum and a fantastic art exhibit! Warhol's Cowboy and Indian prints with an interesting perspective. Even better was the Tom Leigh exhibit and other artists of the Big Bend region.

Sallie E — Google review

This is a great little museum located on the campus of Sul Ross State University in Alpine, Texas. It tells the story of the Big Bend region and those who first came here from Europe. There are some great prehistoric artifacts and beautiful artwork from local region artists. The maps, located in the basement employee area, though few in number, were also very interesting. Enjoy the photos.
